Chamber available at low cost
Unfortunately, the centre in Grimsby which was one of the first ones providing oxygen treatment in the community in England closed end of May. It would be very sad to see a perfect chamber which could help so many people go to the scrapyard.
The chamber has to be moved out of the centre within 6-8 weeks (around mid July). It has been fully serviced in April by Diveline and the centre only wants to be paid for the dismantling costs. The chamber and all the equipment itself was valued at £30,000 but only having to pay the dismantling and transport costs would be a great bargain.
Please let us know as soon as possible if you are interested and can provide this lovely chamber with a new home.

Great Highland Hike
Next month, MSTC volunteer Neil Comfort is taking part in the Great Highland Hike = a 23 mile odyssey fighting off midges from Glen Nevis to Glencoe. It's a near marathon in hiking boots - though as he says "it feels a lot longer when your feet are as flat as mine!"
The hike takes place on Friday 10th June and Neil's team (the Midgical Mountaineers) are aiming to complete it in about 10 hours - so they can have plenty of time at the barbecue before the bus leaves for Edinburgh!
The team are aiming to raise at least £1000 in sponsorship, which will be split equally between the MSTC and the Scottish Community Foundation. Any help in reaching that target would be greatly appreciated! Neil's team can be sponsored at:

The centre will be closed on Friday 29th April

Ben Moran is swimming the Forth
Ben Moran, a member of the Centre, is swimming the Forth on the 1st May to raise money and awareness for the Centre and for research at the MS Society Scotland. He will be departing from the Rail Bridge at South Queensferry and swimming 2.25km to North Queensferry. As well as overcoming his own condition, he is racing against time: he has to complete the crossing in less than 1 hour, otherwise the tide will turn and sweep him out to sea...
He is aiming to complete the crossing in 45 minutes and raise £5,000. To sponsor him, please click here.
Ben is training hard and is about to leave the safety of the swimming pool for the open water off Portobello. To follow his progress on his Facebook page, please click here.

Trevor Callaway
by Bruce Laidlaw, ChairmanIt is with great sadness that we learnt of the death of Trevor Callaway. Not many of the current members of the Therapy Centre will realise the debt they and the Centre owe to Trevor. Back in 1995 the Therapy Centre was in considerable financial difficulty and it was Trevor who personally negotiated a £20,000 grant for the Centre from Lothian Health Board. Without this money the Centre would have closed, and we still receive this grant each year. In addition to his fundraising expertise Trevor was a great person to have with you in a crisis. His enthusiasm and commitment to the Centre was uncompromising and although he always dealt with matters in a very serious and businesslike fashion behind this earnest exterior lay a great and, at times, wicked sense of humour.
There is to be a collection at his funeral in support of Leuchie House Respite Centre which Trevor used a lot latterly. This is typical Trevor, fundraising to the last. Our thoughts are with his wife Jeanette.

The regular enewsletter from the MSRC is headlined by news relating to CCSVI (Chronic Cerebrospinal Venous Insufficiency) and they have a new section on their website to keep users up to date. The first preliminary results have been reported by the clinical studies underway and there is a petition to sign asking for research to be carried out in the UK. Users can also register their interest in possible CCSVI scanning at one of Dr Tom Gilhooly's clinics.
This month's edition also includes gardening tips, a receipe, information on the benefits of Shiatsu massage and other bits and pieces! To sign up to receive the newsletter go to www.msrc.co.uk

Rivals4Charity
We are really delighted to report that MSTC Lothian won the voting to be selected as the charity to benefit from the 2010 Edinburgh Charity Match with a massive 45% of the vote. Very very many thanks to everyone who took the time to visit the Rivals 4 Charity website! Over the last four years the event has raised on average £10,000 per year, and this will be a huge boost to our annual fundraising efforts.
The match will be on Sunday 30th May and trials for the teams are taking place later in February. If you know anyone who would like to play for the Hearts supporters or Hibs supporters then go to rivals4charity to sign up! We will need a few volunteers on the day to help sell tickets and man the turnstiles - please contact us if you would like to help. - December 2009

Assistant Administrators at MSTC Lothian
Further to last month’s newsletter, other changes to staff in the centre have also taken place as Maya has been replaced by two part-time positions. Alison Shepherd and Carla Flannagan are now filling these positions.
Alison is from West Lothian but is currently staying in Edinburgh. She is in third year, studying biology at Edinburgh University. Alison started volunteering in the centre last February and became a member of staff in June.
Carla is also from West Lothian and is in third year at Edinburgh University studying geography. She started here in September and between her and Alison they will make up the full-time position of Assistant Administrator. Both are very happy to be working here and are looking forward to exciting times ahead. - November 2009
Christmas Fundraising - volunteer appeal!
Ocean Terminal offer charities the opportunity to run a gift-wrapping service in the run-up to Christmas. This is very popular and a great way of raising funds. This year MSTC will be there on three days: 12th, 15th and 19th December. Volunteers are needed to come along for an hour or longer—can you help? Sign up in the Centre! While paper, tape and ribbon are provided there will be the opportunity to practise in the Centre beforehand if you wish, as the gift wrapping can get quite busy!
