Complementary Therapies
Our Complementary Therapy practitioners are all self-employed and offer reduced rates to MS clients and their families in the Centre. See below for information on each therapy, and contact them directly to arrange treatment.
Reflexology
Reflexology is a compression massage of the feet. It is one of the most successful complementary therapies in recent times and continues to gain acceptance with western medicine. The body is mapped out on the feet, with each foot divided into five zones corresponding to areas, organs and systems of the body. Areas of imbalance reveal themselves as tender spots on the feet although sometimes one would not have realised they were there before. The Reflexologist works on these areas to address blockages within the body and allow the systems to work optimally and harmoniously.
The most immediate benefit of Reflexology is a sense of well-being and relaxation. This therapy helps to manage the stresses of everyday life by calming the nervous system, which is enormously important in stress management. Relief of stress then enhances the immune system. Existing ailments are also treated depending on their severity.
Many clients at the Centre now rely upon it:
"After any treatment I feel much more calm, relaxed and more in control generally and this feeling lasts for about four days."
"The sensations in my body lessen and I don't get muscle spasms (which is great). These improvements last between a week and a week and a half."
"she can identify a problem without me saying anything, and then sort it out"
"during my first two or three treatments I wasn’t lying straight, but then I became perfectly comfortable….everything just seemed to fall into place.."
"it was a bit sore the first time because there was a lot to fix, but after that it’s been fine”,
and "I really look forward to it – I feel energised and more able to cope".

Auricular Acupuncture
Like massage and reflexology, this therapy is good for relieving pain, stress, and discomfort caused by long-term tension, and aiding relaxation— all important in the management of MS for both sufferers and their carers. Francis uses small electrical impulses rather than needles during the treatment, which can also help with conditions including arthritis, allergies, addiction, insomnia and many more – see the website for full details.
Four sessions, lasting an hour each, are initially recommended to get maximum benefit, and after that clients return for ’top-ups’ approximately once a month or once a fortnight as required.

Hopi Ear Candles
Its name is taken from the Hopi Indians of North Arizona, USA and means 'peaceful people'. It is said that they used the ear candles to treat ear problems. A Hopi Ear Candle is not a candle as such, but a hollow tube made out of cotton flax. To stiffen the flax, it is impregnated with extract of honey and herb oils (in particular chamomile, sage and St Johns Wort).
Hopi Ear Candling has many positive benefits and can help with a variety of conditions of the ear. These include:
- Tinnitus
- Sinusitis
- Excessive ear wax
- General hearing loss
- Colds
- Tension headaches
- Travel sickness
- Meniere's disease
- Glue Ear
- Hay fever and rhinitus
- Headaches and migraines
Although there is no scientific evidence that Hopi Ear Candling can cure any of the above conditions there is a growing number of people who claim that the treatment has been a positive benefit to their problem. Hopi Ear Candling is a mild and safe therapy and its popularity is growing as more people become aware of its positive benefits. It is a safe and gentle treatment for children.
